This collection of poems really resonated with me. Here's three reasons why:One, I loved the feeling of place. Most of the stories have an Alberta/prairie context. Reading about wide-open windswept places and the landscape of the foothills vividly surfaced old feelings and memories, recalling when I lived there, many years ago. You know the words have done their magic when that happens.
Two, I liked how many of the poems captured family moments. We have relationships, get married, have kids... Life races on. It's the moments we remember, and many of these poems originally and lovingly do just that.
Three, I liked the way the book was structured. Even though there was lots of variety in context, content and presentation, it all seemed to flow, hang together, nicely.

This collection opens with a birth--a delivery--perhaps the perfect place to start such a human series of poems. The reader will confront carefully drawn relationships a balance between a narrative that tugs the reader forward and lasting descriptions that leave them lingering there.
While the poems are grounded in the everyday, the language is fresh a new way to look at the familiar making it at once known and unknown. While the place of the poems is (mostly) Alberta, this collection will appeal to anyone interested in the relationship an individual can develop with landscape.
Drawing Back to Take a Running Jump is a beautiful collection I'd highly recommend to anyone interested in landscape (and seasons), human relationships (and their seasons), and of course, Alberta. Engaging work by a skilled writer a book worth revisiting.
I await Lorne Daniel's next collection!
I first came across Lorne Daniel's work online, a single poem called Bone Dance. Intrigued, I set about tracking down more of his writing but was dismayed to discover his previous books were out of print. What a relief to learn that Daniel has just published a new volume of his best poems. Drawing Back to Take a Running Jump is that rare collection of poetry, one that weaves images that disturb in their honesty, and words that exude emotion so emphatically I felt my own heart constrict as I read.
I was really struck by his poems about the unspoken moments of family, giving expression to those instances we take with us through parenthood. At the time, they seem unworthy of story. Yet, years later, we still remember those moments and the emotion they provoked.
The influence of place in Daniel's writing is interwoven with personal narrative, and is emotionally and physically tangible. It reminds me of a story I heard about Clint Eastwood when he filmed Unforgiven in Alberta. Eastwood was apparently impressed with the local set designer who made a perfect western building, right down to the dead flies on the windowsill. Daniel's poems have that authenticity. Place and landscape are vivid and intensely western Canadian, yet are universal at the same time.
I highly recommend this book to fans of poetry and even those new to the genre, as the writing is so accessible, you just might become a poetry convert!
